History:
Afghan refugees first started to make the SF Bay Area home in early 80’s and the community started to feel the lack of a center of sort to be able to address the growing needs of very essential services i.e. burial, fateha, Islamic wedding vows, language and religious studies for youngsters, etc. Therefore, in 1985, with the efforts of a few afghan refugees, the first mosque and the basis of the association was born in Hayward, CA. The first Afghan mosque was a rented building that was named Masjid-e Mission, where all five daily prayers, Friday Jama’at and during the month of Ramadan, Taraweh prayers were performed. Within days, the association purchased with installments, 48 burial grounds at Chapel of the Chimes, a distinguished cemetery in Hayward,
CA. The members of the association started with a modest $10 per family monthly dues which included all burial and fateha related expenses. Today, we are happy to say that our membership stands at around 2000 members.
With the help of our members and community fund raisings, the first ever Afghan mosque, Masjid-e Abubaker’e Siddiq was build and completed in 1997. The building was designed by afghan engineers and now not only one of the most majestic buildings on Mission Blvd in Hayward, CA. but it is one of the most beautiful mosques in the USA with the capacity to hold almost one thousand worshipers. The walls of the mosque, both exterior and interior, are designed with Quranic verses written in mosaic by an Afghan artist. The mosque has a mortuary where Islamic pre-burial rituals are performed in a state of the art facility. The Afghan Refugee Islamic Community of Bay Area, Inc. is organized under the California Nonprofit Religious Corporation Laws.
